Making Society Good?
In 2006 the Carnegie UK Trust launched a new Democracy and Civil Society Programme. A key component of this programme was the establishment of an independent Commission of Inquiry into the Future of Civil Society in the UK and Ireland. The primary objectives of the Inquiry were to:
Explore the possible threats to and opportunities for the development of a healthy civil society, looking out to 2025
Identify how policy and practice can be enhanced to help strengthen civil society
Enhance the ability of civil society associations to prepare for the challenges of the future.
The findings of the Inquiry Commission are documented in the report Making good society, published on 15 March 2010.
Geoff Mulgan, Inquiry Chair, in the first of this week’s series of articles - The Age of We - which are all being published on openDemocracy - argues that three crises have triggered a major civil society challenge.
